The 19th Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. Tournament provided plenty of spirited hockey competition over the weekend. Unfortunately, it also spelled the end of the Vineyard boy’s post-season hopes.

On opening play Saturday night, the Vineyard lost to Lynnfield High School, 4-0. The team’s difficulty in scoring goals was again obvious, although the team worked hard in defeat.

Also, Saturday, Westwood High School defeated Weston High School in the first game, 5-0. Westwood would go on to win the tournament by defeating Lynnfield 4-0.

The opening ceremony also kicked off the team’s weekend cancer fundraiser, “Puck Cancer,” on behalf of the Martha’s Vineyard Cancer Support Group.

On Sunday, the second day of the tournament, the Vineyard played Weston in the consolation game. “Because the team was officially eliminated from postseason play by losing its first game the challenge was to get the kids to play for each other, a tough task in a consolation game,” coach Matt Mincone said.

“Something clicked and the team showed its pride by scoring 7 goals against a Weston team that needed the victory to get into the postseason.”

Last season, Weston defeated the Vineyard in the consolation game and earned the the two points it needed to make the post-season. Not this year.

The Vineyard team jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first period on two goals by freshman Willson Slayton, the first and second of his career.

Slayton’s first goal came at 6:02 on assists by Hunter Ponte and Nick Bischoff. His second tally came just 23 seconds later, assisted by Mason Jeffers and Jacob Gundersen.

Senior Joe Davies also scored a goal at the 9:59 mark, the first of three for him in the game. In total the team outshot Weston 10-6 in the first period.

The second period featured one goal by freshman Hunter Ponte, assisted by Jacob Gundersen on the power-play at 8:27.

In the third period, Weston scored at 3:48 on a goal by Tim Goode assisted by Michael Sacco. The Vineyard quickly responded at 5:36 as Joe Davies scored his second, assisted by Tristan Araujo, while short-handed. The Vineyard scored again at the 7:15 mark with freshman Hunter Ponte collecting his second of the day assisted by Jacob Gundersen and Joe Davies, making the score 6-1.  Weston answered at 8:19 on a goal by Ben Hamblett assisted by Mark DeBenedictis.  Joe Davies would complete the hat-trick with an empty net goal at the 12:25 mark assisted by Tristan Araujo.

The Vineyard season record is now 5-9-4 with two games, both at home remaining. The Vineyard plays North Quincy at 6pm, Friday (Senior Night). The final game, a makeup is Wednesday, Feb. 24 against. Bishop Stang at 4:30 pm.
