The Carver High School Crusaders pounced on four first half Vineyarder turnovers and defeated the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football team 20-15 in the season opener for both squads Friday night at a half-filled Dan McCarthy field in Oak Bluffs.
All the scoring happened in the first half. Ben Clark’s 54-yard run and a Curtis Farrell 30-yard TD reception from Vineyard quarterback Tucker McNeely shaved the Crusader lead to five points at halftime.
The Vineyarders played without key defender Lucas DeBettencourt in the second half and two-way starter Austin Chandler missed the tilt with a knee injury suffered in a pre-season scrimmage this week.
