On Saturday evening, Paul Metell crashed his Chevy Corvette across the front yard of a house at 113 South Water Street in Edgartown, damaging the entrance of the house, the fence, and the lawn, Edgartown police report. Mr. Metell left the scene before police arrived.
Nearly four hours later, Mr. Metell was found at the Newes from America Pub in Edgartown. Police cited him for leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, speeding, and marked lanes violation. He will be summonsed to court to answer the charges.
Edgartown police responded to a call from a neighbor of the damaged house at about 5:30 pm on Saturday. The caller told police about the accident, and that the driver of the vehicle had left the scene on foot and was walking up the street toward the Katama Road intersection.

When police arrived at the crash scene, they found a totaled gray Chevy Corvette with no one inside.
The police report said the responding officer estimated that the Corvette was traveling outbound on South Water Street at an extremely high speed and veered suddenly left toward the property. When the brakes were applied, as indicated by the skid marks on the pavement, because of the car’s high speed the vehicle was unable to stop, and collided with a fence, traveling uphill, and onto the lawn of the property. The passenger side of the car struck the front of the house.
When officers found Mr. Metell, he admitted to crashing the Corvette and said he did not need any medical attention. Asked why he did not call police, Mr. Metell said that he panicked and was unsure of what to do, police reported. Officers were unable to determine whether alcohol was involved in the accident because he was found at the Newes drinking a beer, almost four hours later.
